"The best books on Spain"
Author Jason Webster chooses five books on my adopted long-time home
His selection makes plenty of sense to me as I generally share his taste. (In fact, his book “Duende” is one of the best examples of a very personal kind of nonfiction that I’ve read.
Laurie Lee and Lorca are well-deserved classics he hasn’t ignored. Webster writes:
“All the books that I have chosen are examples of the power of the Spanish imagination.
Although Tufail starts with the scientific he ends up in the mystical, so for me this is a good kicking-off point.
You have four Spaniards and one Englishman...”
Journalist and broadcaster Jason Webster lives in Spain and has written several books about the country. His wife Salud is an actress and flamenco dancer from Valencia.

Yes, I loved 'Duende' [have read it three times now], which you very kindly gave me to read when I was sick from Moroccan water. I have him to thank for many things I have learnt about flamenco, but especially Camarón de la Isla, Surely, though, your 'Slow Travels in Unsung Spain', should be in there, no? Anyhow, this gets me in many places many times: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSAq2oJB53E&list=RDYSAq2oJB53E&start_radio=1
There are some good recs here, Brett, so thanks. The best relatively recent book published on Spain that I've read is The Factory of Light, by Michael Jacobs. In case anyone's interested, I review it here:
